Automating an existing door in North Yorkshire

Shops, offices and schools in North Yorkshire often have aluminium or timber doors that are fine apart from the effort needed to open them. A retrofit operator removes that effort and leaves the frontage looking the same.

Coverage across North Yorkshire

Not every part of North Yorkshire is easy to reach, and some sites need planning around access, parking or opening hours. We take that into account when arranging automating an existing door, and the engineer, working under our management, arrives with what the job is likely to need. The towns below, 8 in all, each have their own page, but any address in the area can be covered.

Towns listed in North Yorkshire: York, Middlesbrough, Harrogate, Scarborough, Redcar, Selby, Thornaby-on-Tees, Yarm.

What to think about for automating an existing door in North Yorkshire

  • Schools and community buildings in North Yorkshire may prefer the work done in holidays or after hours. Ask for any out-of-hours working to be priced in the quote.
  • Power is needed at the head of the door. If there is no supply close by, an electrician will need to run one, ideally hidden in trunking or the wall.
  • Think about how the door is locked. If it is locked by key every night, an electric lock or keep may be worth adding so the door can be secured without switching the operator off.
  • Homes in North Yorkshire with uPVC or composite doors can usually be automated, but the multipoint lock needs to work smoothly first. A stiff lock is best fixed before fitting.
  • Find out whether the door is a fire door. If it is, the operator must suit fire doors and be wired so the door closes when the alarm sounds.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in North Yorkshire and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automating an existing door separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Automating an existing door in North Yorkshire: questions

What if our door in North Yorkshire turns out to need replacing?

Then we will say so and explain why. If you want to go ahead, we can quote a new automatic door, or a new door ready for an operator. If both options are reasonable, we price each so you can choose, and the survey costs nothing either way.

Can you give me a price for automating an existing door in North Yorkshire?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £2,154 including VAT. The free site survey in North Yorkshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you automate the existing doors at our building in North Yorkshire?

In most cases, yes. We check each door at a free survey, including the hinges, frame, glass, locks and power, and then quote a fixed price. If a door is not a good candidate, we explain why and what it would take to fix it, or quote a replacement instead.

Can you automate a fire door at our premises in North Yorkshire?

Usually, using an operator designed for fire doors and wired to the fire alarm so the door closes when the alarm operates. We check the door's rating and condition first. A fire door that does not close and seal properly needs repairing before an operator goes on.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in North Yorkshire?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in North Yorkshire?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Do businesses in North Yorkshire have to fit automatic doors?

No law says every building must have automatic doors. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building regulations guidance in England calls for a powered door where an entrance door would otherwise be too heavy to open. An automatic door is often the simplest way to meet both.
