Automating an existing door in Chelsea

If you would rather keep your existing door in Chelsea than replace it, we can usually add a swing or sliding operator to it. The door is tested and documented at handover, along with the paperwork that comes with a newly automated door.

Covering Chelsea and nearby

Engineers working under our management travel to addresses across the SW3 and SW10 postcode districts for automating an existing door. There is no depot or showroom in Chelsea; you arrange everything with us by phone, email or the form on this page, and we confirm the price in writing first.

Office entrances in Chelsea commonly combine automatic doors with turnstiles, concierge desks and card access. When the operator is wired into those systems, staff pass through quickly, visitors are let in from reception and the building locks down outside working hours.

Nearby towns we also list for automating an existing door (straight-line distance): Battersea (1.1 miles), Kensington (1.3 miles), Fulham (1.4 miles), Westminster (1.6 miles), Clapham (2.2 miles), Shepherd's Bush (2.5 miles).

What to think about for automating an existing door in Chelsea

  • Shop fronts on high streets in Chelsea often have narrow aluminium frames. The survey checks the transom can carry the operator without flexing, and whether it needs reinforcing.
  • Doors facing the weather in exposed parts of Chelsea are pushed about by wind. The survey checks whether a low-energy operator will cope or a stronger unit is needed.
  • Check how the door hangs now. A door that drops, rubs on the floor or needs a shoulder to close will need its hinges or frame sorted before an operator goes on.
  • Find out whether the door is a fire door. If it is, the operator must suit fire doors and be wired so the door closes when the alarm sounds.
  • Glass in a door that will be automated should be safety glass. Older doors in Chelsea may have panes that need replacing before the work goes ahead.

Standards and rules in England

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is automating an existing door for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Chelsea.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Automating an existing door in Chelsea: questions

How long will our door in Chelsea be out of use?

Usually half a day to a day per door. Where hinges, locks or glass are being changed as well, it can take longer. We plan the work so the building stays usable, and agree any out-of-hours working in the quote.

How much should I budget for automating an existing door in Chelsea?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £2,154 including VAT. The free site survey in Chelsea confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

What if our door in Chelsea turns out to need replacing?

Then we will say so and explain why. If you want to go ahead, we can quote a new automatic door, or a new door ready for an operator. If both options are reasonable, we price each so you can choose, and the survey costs nothing either way.

Can you automate the existing doors at our building in Chelsea?

In most cases, yes. We check each door at a free survey, including the hinges, frame, glass, locks and power, and then quote a fixed price. If a door is not a good candidate, we explain why and what it would take to fix it, or quote a replacement instead.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in Chelsea?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in Chelsea?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Can a home in Chelsea get help paying for a door opener?

Possibly. In England a Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £30,000 can fund adaptations that make it easier to get in and out of a home. It is means-tested and must be approved by the council before work starts, so ask your council and occupational therapist.
