Automating an existing door in Dunbartonshire

Shops, offices and schools in Dunbartonshire often have aluminium or timber doors that are fine apart from the effort needed to open them. A retrofit operator removes that effort and leaves the frontage looking the same.

Coverage across Dunbartonshire

Our coverage of Dunbartonshire is not tied to a depot or a showroom. Engineers who carry out automating an existing door for us travel to each site, so a farm shop down a country lane goes through the same process as a city-centre office. Every job is priced in writing before work starts, and the town list below currently numbers 7.

What to think about for automating an existing door in Dunbartonshire

  • Schools and community buildings in Dunbartonshire may prefer the work done in holidays or after hours. Ask for any out-of-hours working to be priced in the quote.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in Dunbartonshire may need consent for an operator on an original door. Mounting it on the inside face usually keeps the street view the same.
  • Shop fronts on high streets in Dunbartonshire often have narrow aluminium frames. The survey checks the transom can carry the operator without flexing, and whether it needs reinforcing.
  • Think about how the door is locked. If it is locked by key every night, an electric lock or keep may be worth adding so the door can be secured without switching the operator off.
  • Homes in Dunbartonshire with uPVC or composite doors can usually be automated, but the multipoint lock needs to work smoothly first. A stiff lock is best fixed before fitting.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers in Scotland must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Scottish building standards guidance (the non-domestic Technical Handbook) expects an accessible entrance door to give a clear opening of at least 800 mm, says powered doors improve accessibility as long as they add no new hazard, and expects signage, sensors that hold the door open long enough, and guarding against collision or entrapment.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the form with the address and what you have in mind. If you are not sure which type of door suits, describe the entrance and we will suggest the options worth considering.
  2. Survey and advice. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer checks the site and explains which options suit the entrance, the people using it and the budget, before anything is priced.
  3. Quote in writing. You receive a fixed, itemised quote for automating an existing door in Dunbartonshire, covering equipment, installation, testing and handover, with the lead time and payment stages set out clearly.
  4. Install, test, explain. The engineer installs and commissions the door, tests the sensors, safety functions and emergency behaviour, and walks you through the controls. The handover pack records what was installed and tested.

Ask us to look at the doors at your premises in Dunbartonshire. If a retrofit makes sense, you get a fixed quote, and if replacement is better, we explain why.

Automating an existing door in Dunbartonshire: questions

Will automating our door in Dunbartonshire need planning permission?

Fitting an operator to an existing door does not usually need planning permission, but a listed building may need consent for fixings or new switches on the outside. In a conservation area, mounting the operator inside often avoids any change to the street view. Check with the planning authority if in doubt.

What do you charge for automating an existing door in Dunbartonshire?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £2,154 including VAT. The free site survey in Dunbartonshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you look after the door in Dunbartonshire once it is automated?

Yes. We can arrange servicing at intervals that suit how much the door is used, with the operator, safety devices and hinges checked and a written record left. Each visit has its price confirmed in writing before an engineer attends.

Can you automate the existing doors at our building in Dunbartonshire?

In most cases, yes. We check each door at a free survey, including the hinges, frame, glass, locks and power, and then quote a fixed price. If a door is not a good candidate, we explain why and what it would take to fix it, or quote a replacement instead.

Will the building stay secure while the entrance is being changed?

We plan to keep the entrance usable or secure throughout. Where a door has to come out, the work is sequenced so the opening is closed up before the engineer leaves, or a temporary door or hoarding is arranged when a longer gap cannot be avoided. How this is handled for your site in Dunbartonshire is agreed before work starts.

What is the lead time for automating an existing door in Dunbartonshire?

Lead times depend on the door type and what has to be made to order. As a guide, operators and accessible door kits are typically two to four weeks from order, and complete sliding entrances typically four to eight weeks from drawing approval. Curved, revolving and hermetic doors usually take longer. The expected lead time is stated in your quote.

Can a home in Dunbartonshire get help paying for a door opener?

Scotland does not have Disabled Facilities Grants. Councils help through their Scheme of Assistance, which can include a grant for essential permanent adaptations. Ask your council whether a powered door opener could be included.
