Automating an existing door in County Fermanagh

Plenty of doors in County Fermanagh are sound but heavy or awkward to open. Fitting an operator to the door you already have is often quicker and cheaper than replacing it. We survey for free and tell you plainly whether automation will work.

What to think about for automating an existing door in County Fermanagh

  • Think about how the door is locked. If it is locked by key every night, an electric lock or keep may be worth adding so the door can be secured without switching the operator off.
  • Homes in County Fermanagh with uPVC or composite doors can usually be automated, but the multipoint lock needs to work smoothly first. A stiff lock is best fixed before fitting.
  • Power is needed at the head of the door. If there is no supply close by, an electrician will need to run one, ideally hidden in trunking or the wall.
  • Glass in a door that will be automated should be safety glass. Older doors in County Fermanagh may have panes that need replacing before the work goes ahead.
  • Shop fronts on high streets in County Fermanagh often have narrow aluminium frames. The survey checks the transom can carry the operator without flexing, and whether it needs reinforcing.

Standards and rules in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, disability access duties come from the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, because the Equality Act 2010 does not apply there. Service providers and employers are expected to make reasonable adjustments, and an automatic door is a common one at entrances. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 require a powered door to have a means to prevent it trapping anyone and a means to open it if the power fails. Guidance on access to buildings is in Technical Booklet R, and building control approval is needed for new entrances.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Northern Ireland machinery, including a new or converted powered door, carries the CE marking (with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment), and the EU Machinery Regulation applies there from 20 January 2027.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the form with the address and what you have in mind. If you are not sure which type of door suits, describe the entrance and we will suggest the options worth considering.
  2. Survey and advice. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer checks the site and explains which options suit the entrance, the people using it and the budget, before anything is priced.
  3. Quote in writing. You receive a fixed, itemised quote for automating an existing door in County Fermanagh, covering equipment, installation, testing and handover, with the lead time and payment stages set out clearly.
  4. Install, test, explain. The engineer installs and commissions the door, tests the sensors, safety functions and emergency behaviour, and walks you through the controls. The handover pack records what was installed and tested.

Ask us to look at the doors at your premises in County Fermanagh. If a retrofit makes sense, you get a fixed quote, and if replacement is better, we explain why.

Automating an existing door in County Fermanagh: questions

Can you automate a front door at a house in County Fermanagh?

Yes. Front doors at home are often automated for wheelchair users and people with limited grip, usually with an electric keep or lock so the door locks itself as it closes. Home prices are quoted including VAT, and the survey is free.

What price range should I expect for automating an existing door in County Fermanagh?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £2,154 including VAT. The free site survey in County Fermanagh confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Do you provide the paperwork for an automated door in County Fermanagh?

Yes. Motorising a manual door brings manufacturer's duties for the completed powered door, so when we automate a door we provide the risk assessment, test record, settings and conformity paperwork at handover. Keep them with your building records, as insurers, inspectors and future service engineers may ask to see them.

What if our door in County Fermanagh turns out to need replacing?

Then we will say so and explain why. If you want to go ahead, we can quote a new automatic door, or a new door ready for an operator. If both options are reasonable, we price each so you can choose, and the survey costs nothing either way.

What power supply is needed for automating an existing door in County Fermanagh?

Most powered doors need a fused spur close to the operator, and some activation and access control devices also need a low-voltage link. The survey checks what is already there. If a new supply is required, the quote says whether we arrange it or your own electrician does, so nothing is left unclear on the day.

What does the written quote for automating an existing door in County Fermanagh include?

The quote lists each item separately: the door or equipment, installation, electrical connections where we provide them, removal of anything being replaced, testing and handover. It is a fixed price for the work described, so it does not change unless the scope changes, and any change is agreed with you in writing first.

Can a home in County Fermanagh get help paying for a door opener?

Possibly. In Northern Ireland Disabled Facilities Grants of up to £25,000 are run through the Housing Executive and are normally based on an occupational therapist’s recommendation, so raise a powered door opener at that assessment.
