What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in West Yorkshire
- Older shopfronts in West Yorkshire often have narrow side screens with large gaps beside the sliding leaves. Light curtains or guard screens can protect them without changing the frame.
- Shared entrances in office blocks need agreement on who pays for upgrades. The inspection report helps landlords and tenants agree the scope before work is ordered.
- Doors serving care homes and hospitals in West Yorkshire may need wider safety zones and gentler closing speeds for residents and patients who move slowly or need help.
- Schools and nurseries need particular attention to finger traps at hinges and beside screens, where small children's hands could easily be caught as the door moves.
- Listed buildings and conservation areas in West Yorkshire may limit visible changes. Slim sensors and discreet guards keep the look of the historic entrance largely unchanged.

Standards and rules in England
Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.
Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.
Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.
How it works
- Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for safety and compliance upgrades and book a survey in West Yorkshire.
- Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
- Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
- Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.
Send us your inspection report for doors in West Yorkshire, and we will arrange a free survey and quote each upgrade as a separate item.
Safety and compliance upgrades in West Yorkshire: questions
How long do upgrades take at premises in West Yorkshire?
Most single-door upgrades take one visit of a few hours. Parts such as light curtains and battery units are typically 1 to 3 weeks to arrive after the quote is accepted. Larger packages are planned with you so the entrance stays usable wherever possible.
What will safety and compliance upgrades in West Yorkshire cost?
Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in West Yorkshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.
Can you quote from our existing inspection report in West Yorkshire?
Yes. Send us the report and we will price each recommended action. If the door has changed since the report was written, or a finding is unclear, the engineer checks it on the free survey before the quote is finalised, so you only pay for what the door needs.
Our door in West Yorkshire has no battery backup. Do we need one?
It depends on whether the door is on an escape route and what the fire strategy for the building requires. Doors on escape routes usually need to open, break out or be openable by hand if the power fails. The person responsible for fire safety in the building should confirm the requirement.
What happens once the installation in West Yorkshire is finished?
The engineer tests every function, including the safety sensors and the behaviour on power loss, and sets the door up with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown how to use the controls and which simple checks to make, and you receive the handover documents, including the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.
Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in West Yorkshire?
It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.
Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in West Yorkshire?
In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
