What to think about for break-out escape route doors in County Tyrone

  • Supermarkets and large stores in County Tyrone see trolleys, pallets and cleaning machines through the entrance. Those knocks can stiffen or loosen break-out fittings, so set service intervals with that traffic in mind.
  • Older entrances on high streets in County Tyrone may have uneven thresholds or sloping pavements. Break-out leaves need a level floor and solid fixing for the bottom pivots, and correcting that can add a day to the work.
  • Get hold of the fire strategy, or ask your fire risk assessor, before the survey. Knowing whether the door must slide open on alarm, break out, or both, saves a second visit and a revised quote.
  • Entrances facing the prevailing wind can have break-out leaves pushed by strong gusts. The break-out fittings and the door's wind settings are chosen at survey to suit how exposed the entrance is.
  • If a canopy, ramp or steps sit close to the door, measure how far a broken-out leaf will travel. A leaf that clips a handrail or step edge will not give the escape width the strategy assumes.

Standards and rules in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 say sliding or revolving doors shall not be used for exits specifically intended as emergency exits, and automatic doors on an escape route need arrangements that never block people leaving, such as failing safely to open or a break-out facility, agreed through the fire risk assessment. Whether a break-out door is suitable is decided by the fire strategy for the building and the person with fire safety duties under the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.

In Northern Ireland machinery, including a new or converted powered door, carries the CE marking (with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment), and the EU Machinery Regulation applies there from 20 January 2027. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 require a powered door to have a means to prevent it trapping anyone and a means to open it if the power fails. Guidance on access to buildings is in Technical Booklet R, and building control approval is needed for new entrances.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for break-out escape route doors and book a survey in County Tyrone.
  2. Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
  3. Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
  4. Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.

Send us the opening size and what your fire strategy asks for, and we will arrange a free survey in County Tyrone and a fixed, itemised quote for a break-out entrance.

Break-out escape route doors in County Tyrone: questions

How long will our entrance in County Tyrone be out of use?

Usually one to three days on site, depending on the size of the opening and any building or electrical work. Where the entrance is the only way in, we plan the sequence so a temporary door or a partly open entrance can be kept, and agree any out-of-hours working in the quote.

What do you charge for break-out escape route doors in County Tyrone?

Our guide starts from £7,995 excluding VAT (per door set), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in County Tyrone confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Our shop in County Tyrone is inside a shopping centre. Can you still fit a break-out door?

In most cases, yes. Centre management usually sets rules on contractors, working hours and connections to the centre's fire alarm. We work within those rules, provide the method statements and insurance details they ask for, and plan the fitting so the unit can trade for as much of the time as possible.

Is a break-out door suitable for an exposed entrance in County Tyrone?

Usually, yes. Wind pressure on the leaves is one of the things the survey checks, along with which way the entrance faces and how sheltered it is. The break-out fittings and operator settings are chosen so the leaves hold in line in normal weather but still open by hand in an emergency.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in County Tyrone?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

What power supply is needed for break-out escape route doors in County Tyrone?

Most powered doors need a fused spur close to the operator, and some activation and access control devices also need a low-voltage link. The survey checks what is already there. If a new supply is required, the quote says whether we arrange it or your own electrician does, so nothing is left unclear on the day.

Which accessibility law applies in County Tyrone?

In Northern Ireland the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 applies, because the Equality Act 2010 does not extend there. Service providers and employers are expected to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and an automatic door is a common one at entrances.
