What to think about for automatic swing doors in Suffolk

  • Schools in Suffolk often prefer installation during half-term or the summer holidays. Operators are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order, so book the survey a few weeks before the break.
  • External swing doors facing the wind need stronger operators and careful set-up. On exposed sites across Suffolk, consider whether a canopy or a sliding door would work better.
  • Electric locks must be coordinated with the operator, so the lock releases before the arm moves. Tell us about existing locks, card readers and intercoms at the survey.
  • Double doors with rebated meeting edges need operators that open and close in sequence. The engineer sets this up so the leaves never clash or leave a gap when closed.
  • Check the hinges first. Older doors in Suffolk often have worn hinges that would fail under an operator, so the survey may recommend heavier hinges or pivots.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in Suffolk and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automatic swing doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

For corridor, office or school doors in Suffolk, send us photos and door sizes and we will plan the right swing operators.

Automatic swing doors in Suffolk: questions

What paperwork do we get for automated doors in Suffolk?

You receive the test record, a site-specific risk assessment, user instructions and the conformity paperwork for each door. When an existing manual door is motorised, whoever does it may take on the manufacturer's duties for the finished door, so the Declaration of Conformity and instructions are handed over at the end of the job.

How much should I budget for automatic swing doors in Suffolk?

Our guide starts from £2,495 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Suffolk confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can our existing doors in Suffolk be automated?

Usually, if the doors, hinges and frames are in good condition. The survey checks the door weight, the hinges, what the operator will fix to and what sits in the swing path. Where a door is too worn, we will say so and quote a new doorset with the operator fitted instead.

Can you service swing doors in Suffolk after fitting?

Yes. We can arrange planned servicing, with each visit priced in writing before an engineer attends. A trained engineer should check the safety functions at least once a year, and busy corridors, schools and hospitals usually need more frequent visits. Staff should also carry out simple daily checks.

What should I send before the survey in Suffolk?

A few photos of the door from inside and outside, rough measurements of the opening, the address and a note of how the entrance is used. If the door already has an operator, a photo of any label on it helps. With that, the engineer arrives prepared, the survey takes less of your time and we can put the quote for automatic swing doors together more easily.

Can installation in Suffolk happen outside opening hours?

Yes. Many shops, surgeries and offices prefer work early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends, when the entrance is quietest. Tell us your constraints when you enquire and they are built into the plan. Any extra cost for out-of-hours work is shown in the written quote rather than added afterwards.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Suffolk?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
