Covering Cowes and nearby

Homes, businesses and public buildings throughout the PO31 and PO32 postcode districts can arrange automatic swing doors with us. We are the contracting party and organise every visit; the engineer, who works under our management, travels in to Cowes for the job rather than working from premises in town.

Work in Cowes is carried out by arrangement. Visits are planned around ferry timings, so the engineer arrives with the parts and tools the job is likely to need and makes the most of each trip.

Nearby towns we also list for automatic swing doors (straight-line distance): Newport (4.2 miles), Ryde (6.3 miles), Sandown (9.7 miles).

What to think about for automatic swing doors in Cowes

  • Check the hinges first. Older doors in Cowes often have worn hinges that would fail under an operator, so the survey may recommend heavier hinges or pivots.
  • Hospital and care home corridors in Cowes need doors that open early enough for beds and trolleys. Radar sensors set to the right range, or a push pad placed before the door, keep traffic moving.
  • Office buildings in Cowes with access control can have doors that open automatically in working hours and only for card holders after hours, using a timer and the existing reader.
  • Electric locks must be coordinated with the operator, so the lock releases before the arm moves. Tell us about existing locks, card readers and intercoms at the survey.
  • Schools in Cowes often prefer installation during half-term or the summer holidays. Operators are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order, so book the survey a few weeks before the break.

Standards and rules in England

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in Cowes and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automatic swing doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Automatic swing doors in Cowes: questions

Will the swing operator in Cowes work with our fire alarm?

It can. Fire doors that are held open must close automatically when the fire alarm operates, and the operator can be linked to the alarm to do this. Other doors can be set to open on alarm where the fire strategy needs it. Your alarm engineer usually makes the panel connection.

What will automatic swing doors in Cowes cost?

Our guide starts from £2,495 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Cowes confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can our existing doors in Cowes be automated?

Usually, if the doors, hinges and frames are in good condition. The survey checks the door weight, the hinges, what the operator will fix to and what sits in the swing path. Where a door is too worn, we will say so and quote a new doorset with the operator fitted instead.

What paperwork do we get for automated doors in Cowes?

You receive the test record, a site-specific risk assessment, user instructions and the conformity paperwork for each door. When an existing manual door is motorised, whoever does it may take on the manufacturer's duties for the finished door, so the Declaration of Conformity and instructions are handed over at the end of the job.

What is the lead time for automatic swing doors in Cowes?

Lead times depend on the door type and what has to be made to order. As a guide, operators and accessible door kits are typically two to four weeks from order, and complete sliding entrances typically four to eight weeks from drawing approval. Curved, revolving and hermetic doors usually take longer. The expected lead time is stated in your quote.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in Cowes?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Cowes?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
