What to think about for automatic swing doors in East Sussex

  • Toilet and changing room doors used by disabled people may suit a low-energy operator instead. The survey compares the options based on how busy the door is and who uses it.
  • Electric locks must be coordinated with the operator, so the lock releases before the arm moves. Tell us about existing locks, card readers and intercoms at the survey.
  • Check the hinges first. Older doors in East Sussex often have worn hinges that would fail under an operator, so the survey may recommend heavier hinges or pivots.
  • External swing doors facing the wind need stronger operators and careful set-up. On exposed sites across East Sussex, consider whether a canopy or a sliding door would work better.
  • Doors on escape routes in East Sussex usually open in the direction of escape. If the current door opens the other way, the survey will flag whether it should be changed before the operator is fitted.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in East Sussex and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automatic swing doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Tell us how many doors you have in East Sussex, and whether they are single or double, and we will arrange a free survey.

Automatic swing doors in East Sussex: questions

Will the swing operator in East Sussex work with our fire alarm?

It can. Fire doors that are held open must close automatically when the fire alarm operates, and the operator can be linked to the alarm to do this. Other doors can be set to open on alarm where the fire strategy needs it. Your alarm engineer usually makes the panel connection.

Is there a guide price for automatic swing doors in East Sussex?

Our guide starts from £2,495 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in East Sussex confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

How quickly can a swing operator be fitted in East Sussex?

Operators for existing doors are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. On site, a single door usually takes half a day to a day, and a pair about a day. We can plan work for evenings, weekends or holidays where the building is busy, with any extra cost shown in the quote.

Can our existing doors in East Sussex be automated?

Usually, if the doors, hinges and frames are in good condition. The survey checks the door weight, the hinges, what the operator will fix to and what sits in the swing path. Where a door is too worn, we will say so and quote a new doorset with the operator fitted instead.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in East Sussex?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

What do you need from us for parking and access in East Sussex?

Somewhere for the engineer's van as close to the entrance as possible, and a clear working area around the door. If parking is restricted, loading rules apply or the site has security procedures, tell us when you book. Those details go into the plan so the visit is not held up on the day.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in East Sussex?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
