Covering Selby and nearby

Homes, businesses and public buildings throughout the YO8 postcode district can arrange automatic door repairs with us. We are the contracting party and organise every visit; the engineer, who works under our management, travels in to Selby for the job rather than working from premises in town.

Older shopfronts are common in market towns, and some in Selby may sit in a conservation area or a listed building. Changes to a frontage can need planning permission or listed building consent, so it is worth checking with the local planning authority before work is booked.

Nearby towns we also list for automatic door repairs (straight-line distance): Goole (9.5 miles), Pontefract (11.9 miles), York (12.1 miles), Thorne (12.6 miles), Castleford (12.7 miles), Normanton (15.4 miles).

What to think about for automatic door repairs in Selby

  • Glass damage needs prompt action to keep people safe. Switch the door off, keep people back from the broken leaf and tape or board the glass if that can be done safely.
  • Grit and stones in the floor guide are a frequent cause of doors sticking or stopping short. Sweeping the threshold and track area regularly prevents many breakdowns.
  • Doors knocked by trolleys, pushchairs or deliveries often go out of line. Repeated impacts damage rollers and floor guides, so it helps to know roughly when the fault first appeared.
  • For surgeries, clinics and care settings in Selby, a door that will not open can stop wheelchair users getting in. Plan an alternative accessible entrance and clear signs while the repair is arranged.
  • Shopping parades and business parks in Selby can have restricted parking or loading. Tell us where an engineer can park and unload tools when you book the visit.

Standards and rules in England

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

How it works

  1. Share the details. Send the address in Selby, the door type and make if you know it, and a description or video of the problem. For servicing, tell us how many doors there are and how busy each one is.
  2. Price confirmed in writing. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends. Some straightforward repairs can be priced in full from photos and the make and model of the door.
  3. Diagnosis and repair. A specialist engineer attends on the agreed date, finds the cause, repairs or services the door, and tests its operation, sensors and safety functions with reference to BS EN 16005.
  4. Written record. Each visit ends with a written record for your files. Anything still outstanding, such as parts on order or recommended upgrades, is quoted before any further work is done.

Send us a photo of the faulty door and its operator label in Selby. We will confirm the visit price in writing and offer the earliest engineer visit available.

Automatic door repairs in Selby: questions

What if my door in Selby cannot be repaired?

If a drive unit is obsolete, or a repair would cost close to a new operator, the engineer explains why. A new drive unit can usually be fitted to the existing frame and leaves, which costs far less than a whole new door. You receive a written quote for that, and whether to go ahead is entirely your choice.

How are prices worked out for automatic door repairs in Selby?

Our guide starts from £95 excluding VAT (visit including the first hour), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £114 including VAT. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Selby, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Is it safe to keep using a faulty automatic door in Selby?

It depends on the fault. A slow or noisy door may be safe to use until the visit, but a door that strikes people, closes unexpectedly or has damaged glass should be switched off and kept clear. If you are unsure, switch it off and use another entrance until an engineer has checked it.

How soon can an engineer get to my door in Selby?

That depends on engineer availability around Selby when you contact us, so we do not promise a time. Tell us whether the door is stuck open, stuck shut or unsafe, and we will tell you the earliest visit we can offer. Meanwhile, set the door to a safe mode and keep people away from the leaves.

How is the visit price set for work in Selby?

We agree the visit price with you in writing before an engineer attends. It is based on the type of door, the work requested and the location. If parts or further work are needed once the engineer has found the cause, those are quoted before they are done, so the cost never moves without your agreement.

How often should automatic doors in Selby be serviced?

No law sets a fixed interval. We recommend a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer's instructions and how heavily the door is used; busy doors are often serviced more often. Site staff should also carry out simple regular checks and keep a record of them.

Can a home in Selby get help paying for a door opener?

Possibly. In England a Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £30,000 can fund adaptations that make it easier to get in and out of a home. It is means-tested and must be approved by the council before work starts, so ask your council and occupational therapist.
