Coverage across the West Midlands

Not every part of the West Midlands is easy to reach, and some sites need planning around access, parking or opening hours. We take that into account when arranging accessible door operators, and the engineer, working under our management, arrives with what the job is likely to need. The towns below, 24 in all, each have their own page, but any address in the area can be covered.

Towns listed in the West Midlands: Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, West Bromwich, Halesowen, Stourbridge, Smethwick, Willenhall, Tipton, Bloxwich, Oldbury, Wednesfield, Shirley, Bilston, Brierley Hill, Aldridge, Rowley Regis, Sedgley, Wednesbury, Kingswinford.

What to think about for accessible door operators in the West Midlands

  • If the door is a fire door, find its rating or records before the survey. Fixings and cabling must respect the rating, and the operator must release the door on the fire alarm.
  • Place push pads where a wheelchair user can reach them without the door swinging into them. That often means mounting a pad on a post or a side wall rather than on the frame.
  • Older public buildings in the West Midlands often have heavy timber doors on worn hinges. Fixing the hinges and the way the door hangs before the operator goes on gives a smoother, longer-lasting result.
  • Check how heavy the door is to push now. If the closer is set very strong for fire or wind reasons, the operator has to be chosen to suit, and the closer may need adjusting.
  • Community halls and churches in the West Midlands may only be busy at certain times. A timer or key switch can keep the operator on while the building is open and leave the door manual the rest of the time.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the form with the address and what you have in mind. If you are not sure which type of door suits, describe the entrance and we will suggest the options worth considering.
  2. Survey and advice. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer checks the site and explains which options suit the entrance, the people using it and the budget, before anything is priced.
  3. Quote in writing. You receive a fixed, itemised quote for accessible door operators in the West Midlands, covering equipment, installation, testing and handover, with the lead time and payment stages set out clearly.
  4. Install, test, explain. The engineer installs and commissions the door, tests the sensors, safety functions and emergency behaviour, and walks you through the controls. The handover pack records what was installed and tested.

Make a heavy door in the West Midlands easy for everyone to open. Ask for a site survey and a written quote, with no obligation to go ahead.

Accessible door operators in the West Midlands: questions

Can you fit an accessible operator to a door at our surgery in the West Midlands?

Yes, in most cases. We check the door, hinges, frame and the wall above at a free survey, then quote a fixed price for the operator, push pads and any repairs needed first. Fitting usually takes half a day to a day per door, planned around your opening hours.

Can you give me a price for accessible door operators in the West Midlands?

Our guide is £1,795 to £2,995 excluding VAT (per single door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in the West Midlands confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

What if the door in the West Midlands is too heavy for a low-energy operator?

Some large or exposed doors need a full-energy operator with safety sensors, or a lighter replacement door, to work reliably. The survey will tell you which, and the quote explains why. Where it will work, we offer the low-energy option first because it is simpler to live with.

Can the operator be serviced after installation in the West Midlands?

Yes. We can arrange visits where the speed, force, safety settings, push pads and closer are checked and a written record is left. You agree the cost of each visit in writing beforehand, and how often we come depends on how much the door is used.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in the West Midlands?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in the West Midlands?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Do businesses in the West Midlands have to fit automatic doors?

No law says every building must have automatic doors. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building regulations guidance in England calls for a powered door where an entrance door would otherwise be too heavy to open. An automatic door is often the simplest way to meet both.
