Accessible door operators in County Down

Surgeries, dental practices, libraries and council buildings in County Down often need just one or two doors made easier to open. A low-energy operator with push pads is a quick, tidy way to do that, and the survey costs nothing.

What to think about for accessible door operators in County Down

  • Doors in exposed spots around County Down can be caught by the wind. A low-energy operator has limited force, so the survey checks whether the door will open and close reliably on a gusty day.
  • Place push pads where a wheelchair user can reach them without the door swinging into them. That often means mounting a pad on a post or a side wall rather than on the frame.
  • Glazed doors in shop fronts and offices in County Down need visible push pads and clear markings on the glass, so people with sight loss can find the pad and see where the door is.
  • Check how heavy the door is to push now. If the closer is set very strong for fire or wind reasons, the operator has to be chosen to suit, and the closer may need adjusting.
  • Older public buildings in County Down often have heavy timber doors on worn hinges. Fixing the hinges and the way the door hangs before the operator goes on gives a smoother, longer-lasting result.

Standards and rules in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, disability access duties come from the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, because the Equality Act 2010 does not apply there. Service providers and employers are expected to make reasonable adjustments, and an automatic door is a common one at entrances. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 require a powered door to have a means to prevent it trapping anyone and a means to open it if the power fails. Guidance on access to buildings is in Technical Booklet R, and building control approval is needed for new entrances.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Northern Ireland machinery, including a new or converted powered door, carries the CE marking (with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment), and the EU Machinery Regulation applies there from 20 January 2027.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the form with the address and what you have in mind. If you are not sure which type of door suits, describe the entrance and we will suggest the options worth considering.
  2. Survey and advice. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer checks the site and explains which options suit the entrance, the people using it and the budget, before anything is priced.
  3. Quote in writing. You receive a fixed, itemised quote for accessible door operators in County Down, covering equipment, installation, testing and handover, with the lead time and payment stages set out clearly.
  4. Install, test, explain. The engineer installs and commissions the door, tests the sensors, safety functions and emergency behaviour, and walks you through the controls. The handover pack records what was installed and tested.

Accessible door operators in County Down: questions

Can you fit an accessible operator to a door at our surgery in County Down?

Yes, in most cases. We check the door, hinges, frame and the wall above at a free survey, then quote a fixed price for the operator, push pads and any repairs needed first. Fitting usually takes half a day to a day per door, planned around your opening hours.

Can you give me a price for accessible door operators in County Down?

Our guide is £1,795 to £2,995 excluding VAT (per single door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in County Down confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

What if the door in County Down is too heavy for a low-energy operator?

Some large or exposed doors need a full-energy operator with safety sensors, or a lighter replacement door, to work reliably. The survey will tell you which, and the quote explains why. Where it will work, we offer the low-energy option first because it is simpler to live with.

Can you fit operators to several doors across our sites in County Down?

Yes. We can survey several doors or buildings in one visit where they are close together and quote each door separately, so you can phase the work if budgets need it. Controls and push pads can be kept the same across sites for consistency.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in County Down?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in County Down?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Which marking should a new automatic door in County Down carry?

In Northern Ireland machinery carries the CE marking, with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment. The EU Machinery Regulation applies in Northern Ireland from 20 January 2027.
