Covering Reading and nearby

Requests for touch-free and push-button activation in Reading are handled by us and passed to a specialist engineer working under our management. Coverage includes the RG1, RG6, RG30 and RG31 postcode districts: town-centre premises, business and retail sites, public buildings and residential streets alike.

Out-of-hours work is common in a city, where retail entrances may only be available before opening and office lobbies at weekends. Work in Reading can be arranged early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends where the building needs it, with any extra cost shown in the written price.

Nearby towns we also list for touch-free and push-button activation (straight-line distance): Woodley (3.8 miles), Wokingham (6.6 miles), Crowthorne (9.7 miles), Yateley (9.9 miles), Bracknell (9.9 miles), Sandhurst (11.0 miles).

What to think about for touch-free and push-button activation in Reading

  • Wireless devices need batteries changing from time to time. Choose wired switches for the busiest public doors, and wireless where wiring would be difficult or would spoil a finished wall.
  • Look at where people approach the door from. A switch that can only be reached once someone is already at the door, or in the leaf's path, is in the wrong place.
  • Shops on high streets in Reading may want the door to open for customers but not for people walking past outside. Narrowing the sensor field or adding a switch helps.
  • Doors next to busy walkways can open for every passer-by on a motion sensor. A wave switch or push pad on that side may cut false openings and heat loss.
  • Keep switch heights and symbols consistent across a site. People with sight loss or memory problems find doors easier when every switch is in the same place.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in Reading and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on touch-free and push-button activation separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Book a free visit in Reading and we will recommend activation for each side of each door, then send a written quote.

Touch-free and push-button activation in Reading: questions

Can you supply switches for several sites in Reading?

Yes. We can survey several doors or buildings and quote each one separately, keeping switch types, heights and symbols the same across all your sites. That makes doors easier to find and use for visitors and staff. Larger orders can be phased site by site.

How are prices worked out for touch-free and push-button activation in Reading?

Our guide starts from £145 excluding VAT (per switch fitted), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £174 including VAT. The free site survey in Reading confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can wave switches in Reading be linked to our access control?

Yes. A wave switch can be set to work only after the access control system has released the lock, or to let people out freely from the inside while entry needs a card. We agree how it should behave and test it with your system at handover.

Our door in Reading keeps opening for passers-by. Can you fix it?

Usually, by adjusting or narrowing the sensor field, or by changing to a switch on that side. If the sensor is old or faulty, it may need replacing. A visit to adjust or replace a sensor is priced in writing before anyone attends, as that is care work.

Can installation in Reading happen outside opening hours?

Yes. Many shops, surgeries and offices prefer work early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends, when the entrance is quietest. Tell us your constraints when you enquire and they are built into the plan. Any extra cost for out-of-hours work is shown in the written quote rather than added afterwards.

Will the building stay secure while the entrance is being changed?

We plan to keep the entrance usable or secure throughout. Where a door has to come out, the work is sequenced so the opening is closed up before the engineer leaves, or a temporary door or hoarding is arranged when a longer gap cannot be avoided. How this is handled for your site in Reading is agreed before work starts.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Reading?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
