What to think about for revolving doors in the Lothians

  • A revolving door needs a flat, level floor and often a recess for the bottom bearing and mat. Check whether the existing slab can be cut, or whether the floor needs building up.
  • Automatic revolving doors need power to the canopy and links to the fire alarm and access control. Plan cable routes before ceilings are closed in.
  • Plan the pass door first. Wheelchair users, pushchairs and deliveries need an accessible powered door beside the drum, and it should be easy to find from the street in the Lothians, with clear signs.
  • Revolving doors with curved glass drum walls have longer lead times. Allow for them in any refurbishment programme across the Lothians, and confirm dates before booking floor layers or shopfitters.
  • Some visitors to buildings in the Lothians find revolving doors hard to use. A slow-speed button, clear signs and staff who can direct people to the pass door all help.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Building regulations guidance treats revolving doors as not accessible on their own, so an accessible powered swing or sliding door should be provided alongside. In Scotland, fire safety regulations say sliding or revolving doors must not be used for exits specifically intended as emergency exits, and Scottish guidance allows automatic and revolving doors on an escape route only where they fail safely to outward opening, or have a monitored fail-safe system that opens them on power failure, sensor failure and fire alarm.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Scottish building standards guidance (the non-domestic Technical Handbook) expects an accessible entrance door to give a clear opening of at least 800 mm, says powered doors improve accessibility as long as they add no new hazard, and expects signage, sensors that hold the door open long enough, and guarding against collision or entrapment.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in the Lothians and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on revolving doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Send photos and any drawings of the entrance in the Lothians, and we will come back with options for a revolving door and an accessible pass door.

Revolving doors in the Lothians: questions

Who services a revolving door in the Lothians after installation?

We can, with each visit priced in writing before an engineer attends. Revolving doors should have their safety sensors, stop buttons and wing edges checked by a trained engineer at least once a year, and busy entrances usually need more frequent visits. Staff should also make simple daily checks and keep a record.

What will revolving doors in the Lothians cost?

Our guide is £29,995 to £59,995 excluding VAT (per automatic door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in the Lothians confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Should we choose manual or automatic for our building in the Lothians?

Manual doors suit smaller entrances with steady traffic and are simpler to maintain. Automatic doors suit busier entrances and visitors with luggage, and add sensors, stop buttons and a slow-speed mode. We explain the difference at the survey and recommend the type that fits how your entrance is used.

Can our reception in the Lothians stay open during installation?

Usually, if there is a second entrance or the pass door can be fitted first. We stage the work so the building stays secure overnight and visitors are directed clearly. Where the revolving door is the only way in, we discuss weekend or out-of-hours working, with any extra cost shown in the quote.

Can installation in the Lothians happen outside opening hours?

Yes. Many shops, surgeries and offices prefer work early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends, when the entrance is quietest. Tell us your constraints when you enquire and they are built into the plan. Any extra cost for out-of-hours work is shown in the written quote rather than added afterwards.

Is there a warranty on revolving doors?

Yes. The warranty terms for the equipment and the installation are set out in your written quote, so you can see exactly what is covered before you accept. Keeping the door serviced at the recommended intervals helps keep it in good order, and the quote explains any conditions that apply to the warranty.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in the Lothians?

The person responsible for fire safety under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 for those premises. Scottish guidance allows automatic doors on escape routes only where they fail safely to outward opening or have a monitored fail-safe system that opens them on power failure, sensor failure and fire alarm.
