Covering Cambridge and nearby

Addresses anywhere in the CB1, CB2, CB3, CB4 and CB5 postcode districts can book revolving doors through us. The engineer who attends works under our management and travels to the site. There is no branch in Cambridge, so the price, the booking and the paperwork all come from one place.

Around Cambridge there is usually a mix of retail parks, business parks and town-centre shops, each with different door needs. A retail park unit may need a wide bi-parting door for trolleys, while a town-centre shop often has a narrow frontage better suited to a single slider or a folding door.

Nearby towns we also list for revolving doors (straight-line distance): Newmarket (12.6 miles), Ely (15.1 miles), Huntingdon (15.7 miles), Haverhill (15.9 miles), St Neots (16.3 miles), Letchworth (21.1 miles).

What to think about for revolving doors in Cambridge

  • Busy reception areas in Cambridge may want to keep people moving during installation week. A second entrance, temporary signs and staged work all help visitors find their way in.
  • Planned servicing is essential on revolving doors because wing edges, stop buttons and sensors protect people on every turn. Budget for regular visits from the start, with each visit priced in writing.
  • A revolving door needs a flat, level floor and often a recess for the bottom bearing and mat. Check whether the existing slab can be cut, or whether the floor needs building up.
  • Night security needs thought. Decide whether the wings will lock across the drum or a night shield is needed, and how the pass door and any shutters will be secured.
  • Revolving doors with curved glass drum walls have longer lead times. Allow for them in any refurbishment programme across Cambridgeshire, and confirm dates before booking floor layers or shopfitters.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is revolving doors for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Cambridge.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Revolving doors in Cambridge: questions

Who services a revolving door in Cambridge after installation?

We can, with each visit priced in writing before an engineer attends. Revolving doors should have their safety sensors, stop buttons and wing edges checked by a trained engineer at least once a year, and busy entrances usually need more frequent visits. Staff should also make simple daily checks and keep a record.

Is there a guide price for revolving doors in Cambridge?

Our guide is £29,995 to £59,995 excluding VAT (per automatic door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in Cambridge confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Will a revolving door in Cambridge work with our fire alarm?

It can. An automatic revolving door can be linked to the fire alarm so it stops, slows or folds as the fire strategy requires, and the pass door can be set to open. Your alarm engineer usually makes the panel connection, and the quote shows who is responsible for each part.

How long does a revolving door project in Cambridge take?

Revolving doors are typically 8 to 14 weeks from order, once drawings are approved. On site, an automatic revolving door usually takes several days, covering floor preparation, drum and canopy, wings, drive and commissioning. We agree the programme with you and plan how visitors will get in while the work is done.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in Cambridge?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

What power supply is needed for revolving doors in Cambridge?

Most powered doors need a fused spur close to the operator, and some activation and access control devices also need a low-voltage link. The survey checks what is already there. If a new supply is required, the quote says whether we arrange it or your own electrician does, so nothing is left unclear on the day.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Cambridge?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
