Automating an existing door in Kendal

Plenty of doors in Kendal are sound but heavy or awkward to open. Fitting an operator to the door you already have is often quicker and cheaper than replacing it. We survey for free and tell you plainly whether automation will work.

Covering Kendal and nearby

Sites across the LA9 postcode district are visited by specialist automatic door engineers working under our management. They travel to Kendal for automating an existing door as bookings come in, so dates depend on the diary rather than a fixed local team, and we give you the earliest date we can offer when you book.

Doors at quieter sites in Kendal and elsewhere in Cumbria can go many years between checks. A safety inspection looks at how the sensors, closing behaviour and emergency functions are working, and gives you a written record to keep on file.

Nearby towns we also list for automating an existing door (straight-line distance): Morecambe (18.4 miles), Lancaster (19.5 miles), Heysham (20.4 miles), Barrow-in-Furness (24.5 miles), Fleetwood (29.7 miles).

What to think about for automating an existing door in Kendal

  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in Kendal may need consent for an operator on an original door. Mounting it on the inside face usually keeps the street view the same.
  • Find out whether the door is a fire door. If it is, the operator must suit fire doors and be wired so the door closes when the alarm sounds.
  • Power is needed at the head of the door. If there is no supply close by, an electrician will need to run one, ideally hidden in trunking or the wall.
  • If the door is on an escape route, keep the existing panic or emergency hardware working. The operator should not stop the door opening by hand in an emergency.
  • Doors facing the weather in exposed parts of Kendal are pushed about by wind. The survey checks whether a low-energy operator will cope or a stronger unit is needed.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for automating an existing door and book a survey in Kendal.
  2. Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
  3. Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
  4. Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.

Automating an existing door in Kendal: questions

Can you automate the existing doors at our building in Kendal?

In most cases, yes. We check each door at a free survey, including the hinges, frame, glass, locks and power, and then quote a fixed price. If a door is not a good candidate, we explain why and what it would take to fix it, or quote a replacement instead.

Is there a guide price for automating an existing door in Kendal?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £2,154 including VAT. The free site survey in Kendal confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

How long will our door in Kendal be out of use?

Usually half a day to a day per door. Where hinges, locks or glass are being changed as well, it can take longer. We plan the work so the building stays usable, and agree any out-of-hours working in the quote.

Can you look after the door in Kendal once it is automated?

Yes. We can arrange servicing at intervals that suit how much the door is used, with the operator, safety devices and hinges checked and a written record left. Each visit has its price confirmed in writing before an engineer attends.

What does the free site survey in Kendal involve?

An engineer working under our management visits the building, measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power supply, and looks at how people use the entrance. The survey is free and carries no obligation. Afterwards you receive a fixed, itemised written quote for automating an existing door, with drawings where the door type needs them.

What do you need from us for parking and access in Kendal?

Somewhere for the engineer's van as close to the entrance as possible, and a clear working area around the door. If parking is restricted, loading rules apply or the site has security procedures, tell us when you book. Those details go into the plan so the visit is not held up on the day.

Can a home in Kendal get help paying for a door opener?

Possibly. In England a Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £30,000 can fund adaptations that make it easier to get in and out of a home. It is means-tested and must be approved by the council before work starts, so ask your council and occupational therapist.
