Covering Winchester and nearby

Sites across the SO21, SO22 and SO23 postcode districts are visited by specialist automatic door engineers working under our management. They travel to Winchester for automatic swing doors as bookings come in, so dates depend on the diary rather than a fixed local team, and we give you the earliest date we can offer when you book.

Parking on a busy high street can be tight. When work is booked in Winchester, the engineer's arrival is planned around loading restrictions, any market days and opening hours, so the visit causes as little disruption as possible.

Nearby towns we also list for automatic swing doors (straight-line distance): Chandler's Ford (6.6 miles), Eastleigh (6.9 miles), Romsey (9.5 miles), Hedge End (10.6 miles), Southampton (11.7 miles), Totton (12.6 miles).

What to think about for automatic swing doors in Winchester

  • Electric locks must be coordinated with the operator, so the lock releases before the arm moves. Tell us about existing locks, card readers and intercoms at the survey.
  • Power comes from a fused spur near the head of the door. In older buildings in Winchester with solid walls, allow time for surface trunking or chasing to reach the operator.
  • Doors on escape routes in Winchester usually open in the direction of escape. If the current door opens the other way, the survey will flag whether it should be changed before the operator is fitted.
  • Hospital and care home corridors in Winchester need doors that open early enough for beds and trolleys. Radar sensors set to the right range, or a push pad placed before the door, keep traffic moving.
  • Double doors with rebated meeting edges need operators that open and close in sequence. The engineer sets this up so the leaves never clash or leave a gap when closed.

Standards and rules in England

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is automatic swing doors for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Winchester.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

For corridor, office or school doors in Winchester, send us photos and door sizes and we will plan the right swing operators.

Automatic swing doors in Winchester: questions

Will the swing operator in Winchester work with our fire alarm?

It can. Fire doors that are held open must close automatically when the fire alarm operates, and the operator can be linked to the alarm to do this. Other doors can be set to open on alarm where the fire strategy needs it. Your alarm engineer usually makes the panel connection.

What will automatic swing doors in Winchester cost?

Our guide starts from £2,495 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Winchester confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can our existing doors in Winchester be automated?

Usually, if the doors, hinges and frames are in good condition. The survey checks the door weight, the hinges, what the operator will fix to and what sits in the swing path. Where a door is too worn, we will say so and quote a new doorset with the operator fitted instead.

What paperwork do we get for automated doors in Winchester?

You receive the test record, a site-specific risk assessment, user instructions and the conformity paperwork for each door. When an existing manual door is motorised, whoever does it may take on the manufacturer's duties for the finished door, so the Declaration of Conformity and instructions are handed over at the end of the job.

Will the building stay secure while the entrance is being changed?

We plan to keep the entrance usable or secure throughout. Where a door has to come out, the work is sequenced so the opening is closed up before the engineer leaves, or a temporary door or hoarding is arranged when a longer gap cannot be avoided. How this is handled for your site in Winchester is agreed before work starts.

Do you service doors in Winchester after installing them?

Yes. We recommend a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer's instructions and how heavily the door is used; busy doors are often serviced more often. Servicing can follow on from the installation, with the price agreed in writing and a record left after every visit.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Winchester?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
