Coverage across Hertfordshire

Not every part of Hertfordshire is easy to reach, and some sites need planning around access, parking or opening hours. We take that into account when arranging accessible door operators, and the engineer, working under our management, arrives with what the job is likely to need. The towns below, 19 in all, each have their own page, but any address in the area can be covered.

Towns listed in Hertfordshire: Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City, Cheshunt, Hatfield, Bishop's Stortford, Borehamwood, Hitchin, Hoddesdon, Letchworth, Harpenden, Bushey, Hertford, Rickmansworth, Potters Bar, Berkhamsted, Ware.

What to think about for accessible door operators in Hertfordshire

  • Community halls and churches in Hertfordshire may only be busy at certain times. A timer or key switch can keep the operator on while the building is open and leave the door manual the rest of the time.
  • Doors in exposed spots around Hertfordshire can be caught by the wind. A low-energy operator has limited force, so the survey checks whether the door will open and close reliably on a gusty day.
  • Check how heavy the door is to push now. If the closer is set very strong for fire or wind reasons, the operator has to be chosen to suit, and the closer may need adjusting.
  • Think about the whole route, not just one door. A step, a heavy inner door or a tight turn after an automatic entrance can still stop a wheelchair user getting where they need to go.
  • Power is usually taken from a fused spur near the head of the door. If there is no supply close by, allow for an electrician to run one, ideally hidden in trunking or the wall.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in Hertfordshire.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

Accessible door operators in Hertfordshire: questions

Can you fit operators to several doors across our sites in Hertfordshire?

Yes. We can survey several doors or buildings in one visit where they are close together and quote each door separately, so you can phase the work if budgets need it. Controls and push pads can be kept the same across sites for consistency.

How much should I budget for accessible door operators in Hertfordshire?

Our guide is £1,795 to £2,995 excluding VAT (per single door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in Hertfordshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Our building in Hertfordshire is listed. Can we still have an operator?

Often, yes. Low-energy operators are compact and can sometimes be mounted on the inside face, with cabling hidden. Listed building consent may still be needed for fixings or new switches, so check with the planning authority. We can supply product details for an application.

What if the door in Hertfordshire is too heavy for a low-energy operator?

Some large or exposed doors need a full-energy operator with safety sensors, or a lighter replacement door, to work reliably. The survey will tell you which, and the quote explains why. Where it will work, we offer the low-energy option first because it is simpler to live with.

What does the written quote for accessible door operators in Hertfordshire include?

The quote lists each item separately: the door or equipment, installation, electrical connections where we provide them, removal of anything being replaced, testing and handover. It is a fixed price for the work described, so it does not change unless the scope changes, and any change is agreed with you in writing first.

What do you need from us for parking and access in Hertfordshire?

Somewhere for the engineer's van as close to the entrance as possible, and a clear working area around the door. If parking is restricted, loading rules apply or the site has security procedures, tell us when you book. Those details go into the plan so the visit is not held up on the day.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in Hertfordshire?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
